John 6:28-29 - The Work of God is to Believe in Jesus
![]() |
In continuation with the theme of being saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone, let's delve into the profound words of Jesus Himself spoken in John 6:28–29. These words offered clarity to His followers when they earnestly sought to understand what they needed to do to carry out the works of God. In response, Jesus provided a simple yet profound answer: the work of God is to believe in Him, the Son of God, whom the Father sent.
The Foundation of Faith
Prior to this statement, Jesus makes it abundantly clear that He gives Salvation to those who believe in him and that it is the will of God the Father.
John 6:27 NKJV - Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
Seeking Signs and Believing in His Work
As the dialogue continued, His followers posed a question:
John 6:30 NKJV - Therefore they said to Him, “What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? ’ ”
Initially, their inquiry revolved around what actions they needed to take. However, upon hearing that the work of God was to believe in Jesus, their focus shifted. Now, they sought to understand what work He would perform that would enable them to believe in Him for eternal life.
The Profound Sign: Laying Down His Life
Of course, the sign that Jesus performed and the work He accomplished for us to believe in Him was the ultimate act of love and sacrifice—the laying down of His life to pay the wages of sin, which is death. In exchange, He gave us eternal life.
The Undeniable Truth: Salvation Through Faith in Jesus
Throughout this discourse, we are repeatedly drawn to an undeniable truth: salvation is exclusively attained through faith in Jesus Christ and His complete and perfect redemptive work performed on the cross of Calvary. There is no other way to be saved. This echoes Jesus's powerful declaration in John 14:6: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
In summary, the work of God, as articulated by Jesus Himself, is not about achieving through human effort but believing in the redemptive work of Christ. Through faith in this complete and perfect work, we receive the precious gift of eternal life, secured by the Son of Man. Furthermore, we are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, which is given freely to all who believe.
